Mature Minds Digital Radio & TV has presented its latest edition of Weekly Features, providing listeners with a review of major national and international developments, alongside key conversations on governance, the economy, security, sports, entertainment and education.
NATIONAL POLITICS
The programme reported that President Bola Tinubu directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to unfreeze the Osun State Government account, following concerns over the timing of the action. The President also reportedly contacted Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, while opposition figures continued to question the independence of anti-corruption agencies.
The broadcast also highlighted Vice-President Kashim Shettima’s commencement of a two-week leave, described as his first leave since assuming office.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom High Commission engaged with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the state of democracy in Nigeria.
ECONOMY AND BUSINESS
On the economic front, President Tinubu commended his economic team and the Nigerian Exchange for their contributions to economic stability and the recent surge in the country’s stock market.
The programme further reported that electricity distribution companies collected ₦208 billion out of ₦253 billion billed to customers, highlighting ongoing issues around revenue collection and the electricity value chain.
Nigeria is also projected to generate an additional $2.5 billion annually in corporate tax revenue from multinational companies under the United Nations’ proposed “Pay-Where-You-Play” framework.
The telecommunications sector also recorded developments, with Globacom reportedly leading internet subscriber growth during the period under review.
SECURITY AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Security cooperation between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin received attention as both countries deepened defence collaboration aimed at combating terrorism and cross-border crime.
The Federal Government also approved a financing framework designed to support the electrification of 30 per cent of health facilities by 2027, a move expected to strengthen healthcare delivery and access to reliable electricity.
SPORTS
Sports dominated another segment of the programme as the Super Falcons produced an emphatic 6–2 victory over Egypt to progress to the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Flying Eagles also secured their place in the WAFU B U-20 final after defeating Côte d’Ivoire in a penalty shoot-out.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is reportedly finalising a historic $7.5 million title sponsorship deal ahead of the commencement of the new season in late August.
ENTERTAINMENT
The Nigerian entertainment industry was thrown into mourning following reports of the deaths of filmmaker Dimbo Atiya and actress Tope Osoba.
The programme also examined continuing conversations around the sustainability and commercial future of Nigeria’s globally recognised Afrobeats industry.
Attention was equally drawn to Next Afrobeats Star Season 2, where the overall winner is expected to receive a recording deal reportedly valued at ₦225 million.
EKITI STATE
In Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration continues to focus on legacy projects, infrastructure and economic consolidation as the state progresses into his second term.
The programme also featured education-focused interventions by Ambassador Yasir Abiola, who reiterated that examination integrity remains fundamental to quality education. He called for collective action by parents, schools, students and other stakeholders to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s examination system.
CLARION CALL: HISTORY, IDENTITY AND PATRIOTISM
The Clarion Call programme on Mature Minds Digital Radio & TV also featured a thought-provoking discussion on the topic, “Who Named Nigeria, and Why Does It Matter Today?”
During the programme, Ambassador Yasir Abiola stressed that understanding Nigeria’s history is essential to developing genuine patriotism. He argued that the greatness of a nation should not be measured merely by its name or geographical identity, but by the character, integrity and responsibility of its citizens.
He urged Nigerians to move beyond ethnic, religious and other divisions and concentrate on the shared values and collective responsibility required to build a stronger nation.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL: TURNING HOLIDAYS INTO LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
The Back-to-School programme also provided an educational perspective, with Ambassador Yasir Abiola encouraging Nigerian students to use their holidays productively by reading, revising academic work, developing practical skills and using technology responsibly.
He further called on parents and education stakeholders to make the holiday period a season of holistic development by working together to promote reading culture, good character, relevant skills and safe digital habits among young people.
The latest edition of Weekly Features therefore brought together the major developments shaping Nigeria, while also highlighting important conversations around leadership, patriotism, education, youth development and national progress.
