All flights in and out of Bristol Airport were suspended Friday evening after a fault was found on the runway, causing widespread disruption and leaving travellers stranded. The airport stopped all departures and arrivals at 6:08pm on Friday. It first announced operations would resume by 8am Saturday, but GB News reported the closure was later extended into Saturday morning as engineers inspected and carried out repairs.
Airport authorities described the shutdown as a “precautionary measure” and said safety was the top priority. They advised passengers to check directly with their airlines. Budget carrier EasyJet warned customers to expect further delays to and from Bristol. The sudden halt caused confusion. Travellers complained of poor communication and trouble collecting luggage.Richard Broadbent, who was set to fly to Newcastle with his partner and daughter, told the BBC staff moved everyone to a packed ground-floor area after cancellations were announced.
“They suddenly said all flights were cancelled. It was absolutely packed down there,” he said. He added that alarms later went off, increasing panic among passengers.Paul Smith, who was due to fly to Glasgow for his son’s 20th birthday, also criticized the airport’s response. “The communication, advice and support for passengers has been really poor,” he told the BBC.Other passengers said they were left waiting in baggage reclaim with no clear updates. One traveller posted on X asking for information after being stuck for hours.
The airport confirmed the issue was a runway defect but gave no further details. Some passengers on social media described it as a “hole in the runway,” though officials did not use that wording.
Flights due to land in Bristol Friday evening were diverted to London Gatwick, Birmingham and Cardiff. At the time of reporting, the airport had not confirmed when normal operations would fully resume.
