NCDC: ADULTS AGED 21-30 MOST AFFECTED BY LASSA FEVER IN 2026

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, says people between the ages of 21 and 30 make up the highest number of confirmed Lassa fever cases this year.

According to the agency’s report, confirmed cases so far range from 1 to 93 years, with the median age at 30. The male-to-female ratio is 1:0.9.

The NCDC also noted that both suspected and confirmed cases recorded in 2026 have already surpassed figures for the same period in 2025.

*COMMUNITIES URGED TO INTENSIFY PREVENTION*

Beyond treatment in hospitals, the NCDC stressed that community involvement is key to curbing the spread of Lassa fever.

The agency said it has stepped up sensitisation for farmers, market women and other community groups, while traditional and religious leaders in affected states are also being engaged.

Lassa fever spreads mainly through contact with food or household items contaminated by urine or faeces of infected rodents. It can also spread from person to person, especially in health facilities with weak infection control.

The NCDC is therefore calling on states to strengthen prevention, surveillance and response all year round, instead of waiting until outbreaks get worse.

With 237 deaths recorded so far, health authorities warn that early detection, quick treatment, better sanitation and increased public awareness are critical to reducing further fatalities.
