The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has approved a new remuneration package for political and public office holders at the local government and development centre levels.
Under the new structure, a Local Government Chairman will earn ₦450,000 monthly, while the Vice Chairman will receive ₦400,000.
A Supervisor will earn ₦230,000, Secretary ₦240,000, and Special Assistants to the Chairman will receive ₦165,000 monthly.
For the legislative arm at the local government level, the Leader will earn ₦300,000, the Deputy Leader ₦250,000, while Councillors will receive ₦230,000 monthly.
At the Development Centre level, Coordinators will earn ₦277,000 monthly, while Management Committee members will earn ₦226,000.
The approval followed the passage of a bill seeking to amend Schedules A and C of Law No. 004 of 2008, as amended in 2015. The bill was considered during plenary on Wednesday at the Legislative Complex, Nkaliki Road, Abakaliki, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa.
The amendment was sequel to a letter from Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to the House requesting a review of the existing salary structure for grassroots officials.
Leading the debate, the House Leader, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, stated that the Constitution empowers state legislatures to make laws on the structure and administration of local government councils.
The House subsequently dissolved into the Committee of the Whole to scrutinize the bill before returning to plenary for passage.
After consideration, Hon. Ikoro moved a motion for the passage of the bill, which was seconded by the member representing Ikwo North Constituency, Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu. The bill was unanimously passed via voice vote.
Speaker Odunwa thereafter directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Edene Uche Blessing, to communicate the Assembly’s resolution to Governor Nwifuru for assent.
He also commended the Governor for his commitment to the welfare of public officials and grassroots governance.
The House reiterated its commitment to collaborate with the executive arm in advancing the administration’s People’s Charter of Needs agenda.
Plenary was adjourned to another legislative day after a motion moved by the House Leader and seconded by Hon. Aloysius Nwodo, representing Ebonyi North West Constituency.
