One Nigerian Army officer and a police officer lost their lives after troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA repelled an attack on a Forward Operating Base in Kasuwan Daji, Kaura Namoda LGA, Zamfara State. The military also rescued nine civilians who were kidnapped during the assault. This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA.According to the Army, terrorists tried to breach the FOB at about 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, but troops detected the movement early and responded with heavy fire.“Troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Kasuwan Daji decisively foiled an attempted infiltration by terrorists.
The attack led to heavy casualties on the attackers’ side and forced them to flee in disarray,” the statement said.Following the initial exchange, reinforcements were sent in. Troops went after the fleeing attackers who had abducted residents from nearby communities, and successfully rescued nine abducted locals.“
The terrorists attempted to take advantage of darkness to attack the facility. Alert troops engaged them with coordinated firepower and compelled them to withdraw in confusion,” Osoba stated. The Army confirmed casualties on the security side: “Regrettably, one Army officer and one Police officer paid the supreme price. Two soldiers were also shot and have been airlifted for treatment. Both are stable.”The military said the area has now been secured and that exploitation operations are ongoing to determine the full losses suffered by the terrorists. The Army dismissed social media claims that six security personnel died in the incident. “Contrary to online rumours of six deaths, only one Army officer and one policeman were killed,” Osoba clarified.
He added that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to sustaining offensives against terrorist groups in the North-West until peace is restored.“This failed attack is yet another setback for terrorists amid ongoing military operations across the region,” the statement concluded.
