I remember those days when Industrial and General Insurance (IGI) was one of the proudest names in Nigeria’s insurance industry, under the visionary leadership of its founder, the late Mr. Remi Olowude. IGI was not just an insurance company; it became a household name, a major supporter of Nigerian sports and, importantly, the national football teamsβ€”the Super Eagles among them.

But what I remember most is that powerful message:β€œWhat makes IGI strong? People.”Watching the events unfolding in Osun today, that old message suddenly came alive in my mind. What makes Osun strong? People. Not the guns. Not intimidation. Not money. Not the machinery of power.

The people. There is something deeply moving about watching ordinary citizens stand resolutely for what they believe is right. In Osun today, the people have demonstrated that democracy is ultimately not about the loudest voice or the biggest political structure. It is about the collective will of the people.

A people who have made up their minds cannot easily be bought over. A people who have found their voice cannot permanently be silenced. And when a people genuinely love the person they have chosen, no amount of inducement, intimidation or political muscle can simply erase that bond. This is why democracy remains so powerful.

The ballot may be a small piece of paper, but behind it is the enormous power of the people. And perhaps the most beautiful lesson from Osun today is this:When you are loved by your people, you don’t need to force your way into their hearts.

Their conviction becomes your greatest protection.Whatever the final outcome of today’s contest, the courage of the Osun electorate to come out and make their voices heard is a reminder that the people remain the ultimate owners of democratic power.Indeed, the power of the people is far greater than the power of the gun.

And in the end, there is perhaps no better philosophy for public life than this:It is good to be good.Because when you are good to the people, the people will remember. What makes Osun strong?People.*Adl*
