The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across the country. The exercise is expected to be completed within three weeks.
This was disclosed on Thursday in a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, media aide to Vice President Kashim Shettima, after the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council in Abuja.According to the statement, Shettima, who chaired the meeting, said the rehabilitation is aimed at preparing the institutions for the commencement of training programmes by the Nigeria Police Force.
The VP also approved the Revised National Social Protection Policy 2026-2030, presented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu. Shettima urged states to align their social protection laws, budgets and implementation plans with the revised policy.
The NSPP 2026-2030 is designed to strengthen coordination, financing, implementation, monitoring and accountability of social protection programmes nationwide. It proposes the establishment of a National Social Protection Council to provide overall oversight. The council will be chaired by the Vice President, with the Ministers of Budget and Economic Planning, Labour and Employment, and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction as Vice Chairmen.
The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning will serve as Secretariat, while six governors, one from each geopolitical zone, will serve as members.Speaking at the meeting, Shettima stressed the need for continuity in government policies.
“There is no doubt that a serious government is measured by the matters it refuses to abandon,” he said. “Macroeconomic progress must translate into jobs, purchasing power, business confidence and stronger subnational economies, because numbers become politically meaningful when citizens recognise themselves in their improvement.”
