Residents of Owode Community, Zone 3, along Basiri-Nova Road, on Saturday, 1st August 2026, successfully completed the reconstruction of an internal street culvert to ensure safer and smoother passage for commuters. For several years, the old culvert, which was made of iron, had deteriorated. This caused frequent accidents involving pedestrians and generated excessive noise whenever vehicles passed over it, disturbing residents in the area
A few months ago, the community resolved to rebuild the culvert using concrete. The project was funded primarily from the community treasury and supported by personal donations of sand, gravel, and bags of cement from landlords within the zone. With the completion of the project, motorists plying that axis of Owode Community Zone 3 can now move without obstruction, while the persistent noise that had troubled the neighbourhood has also been eliminated.
By undertaking this initiative, Owode Community Zone 3 has demonstrated that government alone cannot provide all infrastructure needs. Communities must embrace self-help efforts to complement government and drive local development.
