Osun State has said it will drag the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to court over the freezing of its government accounts.State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, disclosed on Wednesday that he has Governor Ademola Adeleke’s mandate to file a suit at the Federal High Court.Jimi-Bada said the EFCC sent a “Post No Debit” letter to First Bank, where Osun government accounts are domiciled.“EFCC can investigate the accounts but it cannot freeze them without a court order,” he said.
“This will affect government business. We will challenge the move and ensure the agency acts within the law.”Corroborating him, Commissioner for Finance, Sola Ogungbile, alleged that police officers stormed the main branch of First Bank in Osogbo and arrested some bank staff.Ogungbile also denied that Adeleke was using state funds for his re-election campaign, and urged the EFCC to consider the impact on residents.Earlier, the governor raised the alarm that the EFCC planned to freeze all state accounts and those of top officials.
In a statement by Information Commissioner Kolapo Alimi, Adeleke described the move as “lawlessness” and an attempt to cripple government ahead of the August 15 governorship election. He maintained that the EFCC has no legal power to freeze a state government’s accounts._Details later…_
