The Osun State Police Command has released the Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Adejoorin, after detaining him for nearly 24 hours.Adejoorin was arrested in Ilesa on Saturday following a shooting incident in the Isokun area that left three people injured.
According to reports, the shooting occurred during a street rally by members of the APC in Ilesa West Local Government. One of those injured was identified as 14-year-old Tobi Ilesanmi, who was reportedly shot near Isokun.
The incident has sparked a blame game between the APC and the Accord Party. Adejoorin was said to have been passing through Ilesa after the crisis when he was intercepted by police operatives and taken to the Command headquarters in Osogbo.Speaking to our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said three persons were injured in the attack.
He alleged that operatives of the Amotekun Corps in a vehicle with government plate number OSHAO4 opened fire during the APC rally.“Three persons are confirmed injured and were taken to different hospitals. From our report, they were shot at the rally ground.
The rally was ongoing when a vehicle with that plate number parked beside them. Some persons identified as Amotekun personnel alighted and started shooting sporadically,” Ojelabi stated. He added that Intelligence Response Team operatives on their way to the scene intercepted Adejoorin’s white Lexus 350.
“On intercepting the vehicle, we found an Amotekun personnel inside. We arrested the vehicle, the personnel, and another occupant. On interrogation, we discovered the other person was Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin.
They were brought to Osogbo for questioning to determine their level of involvement,” he said.Ojelabi confirmed that four expended cartridges and a pump-action gun were recovered from the scene.Meanwhile, Head of the APC Campaign Council for Ilesa West, Folarin Fafowora, said the shooting started just as the rally was ending.
He alleged that the Chief Whip of the Osun House of Assembly, Hon. Wale Akerele, was in the vehicle escorted by Amotekun operatives who fired shots.Efforts to reach Akerele were unsuccessful as of press time.
Reacting, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, accused APC members of carrying out the shooting and vandalizing the Accord Party secretariat in Ilesa.Ojelabi confirmed that Adejoorin has since been released, but could not confirm the status of the Amotekun operative arrested with him.
