It is no longer news that the ovation for the 30th anniversary of the creation of Ekiti State is around the corner. Across the state and the nation at large, the atmosphere is charged with celebration and reflections on how far we have come as a people.
However, as we celebrate, it is imperative to ask a pertinent question: of what significance will this anniversary be to the lives of the average Ekiti citizen? A celebration without a lasting legacy is merely an event. For Ekiti at 30 to be truly memorable, the celebration must leave a landmark that will positively impact lives long after the fanfare is over.
*How Can Ekiti Achieve This?*
One of the most sustainable ways is through strategic youth empowerment via skill acquisition.
Presently, different associations of artisans — including fashion designers, hairdressers, barbers, welders, shoemakers, and caterers, among others — are duly registered under the state government. This provides a credible structure that the government can leverage.
In view of this, I propose that as part of the 30th anniversary activities, the government should, through these registered associations, select at random, five (5) apprentices who are due for graduation in each of the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.
This selection must be carried out discreetly and strictly without political affiliation, to ensure that the real beneficiaries, the vulnerable and deserving youths, are reached.
The government can then empower these selected youths with starter packs, tools and equipment relevant to their various trades.
*The Sustainable Impact*
The legacy and significance of such a gesture cannot be overemphasized. By empowering these young artisans, the government would not only be putting tools in their hands but also putting hope and self-reliance in their hearts.
To ensure sustainability, this empowerment must be strictly monitored by a designated government agency for a minimum period of six to twelve months, to track the progress and growth of the beneficiaries.
With this approach, the level of unemployment will drastically reduce, social vices will be curbed, and Ekiti State will be building a future of productive and self-reliant youths. That, indeed, would be a celebration beyond celebration.
