The Supreme Court has directed that the title “Barrister” should no longer be used as an official designation for legal practitioners in Nigeria.
For years, many lawyers in the legal community have used “Barrister” as a professional prefix in both formal and informal correspondence.
According to legal analysts, the Court’s directive reflects a renewed commitment to institutional discipline, uniformity, and alignment with internationally accepted standards of legal practice within the Nigerian judiciary.
Although the circular is addressed mainly to staff and practitioners who appear before the Supreme Court, it is expected to set the tone for similar compliance across other courts and legal bodies as members of the Bar align with the new directive.
