The Commissioner of Police in charge of the August 15 Osun governorship election, Samuel Etaifo, says no fewer than 15,000 officers will be deployed for the exercise.Etaifo disclosed this on Wednesday in Osogbo while addressing journalists after a meeting with personnel deployed for the election. He said the deployment will include conventional policemen, specialists, dog section, medical team and the Police Mobile Force.
A Deputy Inspector General of Police and an Assistant Inspector General of Police will also be in the state to supervise the operation, he added.“As I speak, we are expecting not less than 15,000 officers for this election. This includes conventional police, specialists, dog section, medical and PMF. The DIG and AIG in charge of the operations are coming,” Etaifo said.“I am the CP in charge of the election, that is why the IGP deployed me here. We were to arrive four to five days before the election, but because of the heightened tension the IGP asked me to come early.”
He noted that some officers had already been deployed earlier due to rising violence in the state. The CP urged personnel to maintain high ethical standards and act within the law, warning that anyone who undermines the election would face consequences regardless of status. He also said anyone arrested during the poll would be taken to Abuja, adding that the election is a national event.“
Anybody arrested here in Osun during or after the election will be moved straight to Abuja. That is the order,” he said.14 candidates, including Governor Ademola Adeleke, will contest the governorship election scheduled for August 15.
