Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has directed the setting up of an additional military formation in the Eda Oniyo axis of Ilejemeje Local Government Area to boost security in the border community.
The Governor also ordered the fast-tracking of the Divisional Police Station under construction in the area, saying the project is key to strengthening the community’s security architecture.
Oyebanji gave the directive on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from Eda Oniyo led by the Eleda of Eda Oniyo, Oba Julius Awolola, during a thank-you visit to the Governor’s Office.
He said his administration is committed to protecting all parts of Ekiti and will not abandon any community to criminals.
Acknowledging that development in Eda Oniyo had been slow due to a prolonged legal tussle over the LGA headquarters, the Governor assured residents that government would now focus on transforming the town to befit its status.
He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the creation of state police, describing it as a bold and timely move to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.
Oyebanji further disclosed that joint patrols by soldiers, police and other security agencies are already ongoing in the border town to prevent criminals from neighboring states.
“This government is here to serve you. I have heard your request. The police station is ongoing and I will ensure its speedy completion. General Ogundana, we need a military base in Eda Oniyo. It is very important. Bring me the cost and I will approve it,” he said.
Earlier, President of the Eda Oniyo Progressive Union, Dr Rufus Ojo, who spoke on behalf of the monarch, thanked the Governor for his intervention during the recent security crisis and for providing medical care to rescued kidnap victims.
He also urged government to use the vast land in the area for agricultural projects to boost security and improve the economic wellbeing of residents.
Present at the meeting were Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, SSG Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, Chief of Staff Niyi Adebayo, SA Security Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (rtd), SA Media Yinka Oyebode, and members of the Eda Oniyo Progressive Union.
