Ibadan-based TikToker, Wasilat Olalere, has alleged she was forced to falsely claim she fell ill after recording the revered Oloolu masquerade.Olalere’s video, which showed security operatives and residents waiting for the annual Oloolu outing, went viral last week and sparked outrage among custodians of the tradition. In a new video trending on Wednesday, she told an Islamic cleric in Ibadan that she never saw the masquerade and did not fall sick.
“I only filmed Amotekun vehicles and people in front of our house waiting for Oloolu,” she said. “I captioned it that Oloolu was around Atolu and people should be careful. When people asked me to take it down, I did immediately.”She alleged that shortly after, men identified as Sokoti — members of the Oloolu institution — stormed her shop, threatened her, and took her away.
“They said the Olubadan requested me. They said I would go to jail,” Olalere recounted. “They detained me at Agungun Police Station and bailed me on Saturday. After that, they took me to Ode Aje for traditional rites.”According to her, her family was made to provide a goat, red cloth and blade. She alleged she was made to sit on a mortar while the goat was slaughtered on her head and the blood left to dry on her.
“They recorded me and forced me to say I had been bleeding and unwell since seeing Oloolu, and that I came for cleansing. Nothing happened to me. I didn’t see blood,” she said. She also alleged her husband paid N400,000 after buying all the items for the rites.
Oloolu family secretary, Oluwo Ishola Akeem, had earlier said Olalere came voluntarily for cleansing after violating cultural norms, and denied claims of assault or death. Olalere, however, insists the apology video, the rites, and the money were all done under duress.
