President Bola Tinubu has directed a review and reconstitution of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move followed concerns raised by senior APC stakeholders over the composition of the initial 223-member list released by the Presidency, which was to be led by former Zamfara Governor Abdul’aziz Yari as Director-General.
According to _The Will_, party leaders complained that several key stakeholders, experienced campaigners, and regional representatives were left out of the first list.
Sources say the President has instructed his Chief of Staff to work with the National Assembly leadership and the APC National Working Committee to expand the structure and ensure broader representation across regions, the legislature, and party leadership.
Major issues raised included the exclusion of Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the highest-ranking South-East political office holder, and the positioning of other National Assembly leaders. Senate President Godswill Akpabio was named Deputy Director-General for Southern campaign, while Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Governor Mai Mala Buni also got senior roles. However, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Deputy Senate President Jibril Barau were given coordinating roles, which some members felt did not match their constitutional ranking.
Other notable omissions included former Campaign DG Simon Lalong, Minister Festus Keyamo, NSA Nuhu Ribadu, former Governor Yahaya Bello, former Governors Gbenga Daniel, Ibikunle Amosun, and Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Party sources said the initial list was too narrow and did not reflect the APC’s full political network. The review is expected to produce a more inclusive team to mobilize for the 2027 election.
There is, however, no indication that Yari’s appointment as DG has been revoked.
The reconstituted council will be tasked with promoting the administration’s achievements, explaining economic policies, and driving support for President Tinubu’s second-term bid.
