The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested two persons over the alleged assault, abduction and death of a 45-year-old man, Mr. Ogunsakin Sunday, in a case linked to a land dispute in Afao-Ekiti.
The suspects were identified as Rotimi Joseph Olabiowonu, popularly known as “Mentilo,” former Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Ekiti State chapter, and one Adedoyin Opeyemi.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, the incident occurred at about 8:45 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The police said Mentilo and about five other accomplices allegedly stormed the deceased’s residence in Afao-Ekiti in a Toyota bus, dragged him out, assaulted him and drove him away to an unknown destination.
While the vehicle was in motion, the suspects allegedly pushed the victim out, causing him to sustain severe head injuries.
The victim was later taken to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, after the suspects reportedly realised the gravity of his condition. He was, however, confirmed dead by a doctor on duty.
Following a report of the incident, operatives visited the scene and commenced investigation, leading to the arrest of Mentilo and Opeyemi. The other members of the gang are still at large.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case for a comprehensive investigation.
The Command assured that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice and urged members of the public to remain calm and not take the law into their own hands.
