As Ekiti State marked 30 years of its creation on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji described the anniversary as more than a commemoration of statehood, saying it represents a moment to reflect on the struggles, resilience and achievements of the people while deliberately shaping the future.

In a commemorative address marking Ekiti at 30 and Nigeria at 66, Governor Oyebanji recalled the atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding the creation of the state on October 1, 1996, under the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha.

He noted that many Nigerians had gathered around their radios that morning, waiting to hear the announcement of the new states to be created, while the prospects of Ekiti emerging as one of them appeared uncertain.

According to him, Ekiti eventually emerged despite having to contend with what he described as “more formidable contenders.”

“But to the glory of God, we made it,” the Governor said.

A day of independence, thanksgiving and identity

Oyebanji said the coincidence of Ekiti’s 30th anniversary with Nigeria’s Independence Day gives October 1 a special meaning for the people of the state.

He described the occasion as a day of independence and thanksgiving, stressing that Ekiti’s identity goes beyond geography.

He said the people are connected by common geography, culture, language and aspirations, while congratulating Ekiti sons and daughters as well as people from different parts of the world who have made the state their home.

The Governor acknowledged that the three decades have not been without difficulties.

He recalled periods of instability, economic downturns and security challenges, but said Ekiti had continued to advance despite the difficult seasons.

“But to the glory of God, we have moved on stronger and better,” he declared.

‘We celebrate our struggles, challenges and victories’

Rather than presenting the anniversary solely as a celebration of achievements, Oyebanji said Ekiti must also remember the difficult experiences that have shaped its journey.

He said the state was celebrating its struggles, challenges and victories, alongside the unity, resilience and determination of its people to position Ekiti among leading states in human development.

The Governor paid tribute to the different generations and groups whose contributions have shaped the state.

He specifically acknowledged the heroes of Ekiti’s history, sacrifices of its forebears, struggles of its youths, choices of its mothers, wisdom of its elders and industry of its people.

He also drew attention to the communal values represented by the state’s crest, describing Ekiti as a people bound by communal cooperation and collective survival.

From 30 years of history to 30 years of transformation

The most forward-looking element of the Governor’s address was his presentation of the anniversary as a springboard for a new long-term development vision.

With the anniversary theme, “Ekiti at 30: Celebrating the Past and Creating the Future,” Oyebanji said the state has decided to use the milestone as a launchpad for a 30-year transformation agenda.

The agenda, according to the Governor, is intended to position Ekiti as a leading centre for:

  • Agricultural production and agro-processing;
  • Innovation and technology development;
  • Quality and functional education;
  • Research and skills development;
  • Tourism;
  • Culture and the creative economy;
  • Youth entrepreneurship; and
  • Sustainable development.

He linked the proposed transformation agenda to broader economic objectives, including the creation of quality employment, increased productivity, stronger enterprise and an improved quality of life for residents.

‘This is our promise’

Oyebanji presented the long-term agenda as a commitment to future generations rather than merely an anniversary declaration.

“This is our promise. We are resolutely committed to it,” he said.

The Governor’s address therefore placed the significance of Ekiti’s 30th anniversary not only in remembering how the state came into existence, but in determining what the next three decades should produce.

His message was ultimately a call to build on the experiences of the past while using the state’s communal strength, human capital and resilience to pursue a more productive and sustainable future.

The Governor concluded by congratulating Ekiti people and Nigerians on the twin celebrations.

“Long live Nigeria. Long live Ekiti State,” he said.

The Ekiti State Government has separately described the 30th anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the state’s progress since its creation and has highlighted a long-term ambition to position Ekiti as a major technology and innovation hub.
