Lagos – Nigeria
The funder of the Action Group Renewal Organization, AGRO Nigeria, Comrade Adeyinka Fadumiye, has condemned the alleged freezing of the Osun State Government’s bank account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, describing it as “disturbing, reckless, and a dangerous abuse of power.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Fadumiye questioned the neutrality of the anti-graft agency under its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, and asked whether the same action would have been taken if Osun were being governed by an All Progressives Congress, APC governor.
“The question Nigerians should ask is whether the EFCC would have frozen the account of the Osun State Government if Governor Ademola Adeleke were an APC governor,” he said.
Fadumiye expressed concern that an institution set up to fight corruption is now being perceived as serving political interests instead of maintaining the independence expected of a federal law enforcement agency.
He also referenced Olukoyede’s public identity as a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, saying the position comes with a moral responsibility to uphold justice and fairness.
“As a pastor, he should not allow himself to be used for partisan political purposes. Every public office holder will ultimately account for his actions and inactions before God,” he stated.
The AGRO Nigeria leader further argued that under Nigerian law, the EFCC lacks the authority to freeze a state government’s account without a court order from a court of competent jurisdiction. He noted that Nigerian courts have previously set aside similar actions where due process was not followed.
According to him, the timing of the alleged freezing, coming ahead of the Osun governorship election, is unlikely to be coincidental.
He alleged that the action was aimed at frustrating the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke and that the APC and its governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, were seeking alternative means to weaken the incumbent instead of presenting convincing programmes to voters.
Fadumiye called on Governor Adeleke to immediately direct the Osun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to approach the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo to seek an order compelling the EFCC to unfreeze the state’s account if the action was taken without judicial authorization.
He further claimed the APC had become desperate ahead of the poll, alleging that the party feared defeat. He urged Osun residents to remain vigilant and to exercise their democratic rights peacefully.
“The credibility of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on the impartiality of public institutions and the strict observance of the rule of law,” Fadumiye concluded, warning that actions capable of undermining public confidence in democratic institutions should be avoided.
